About The Online Chaplain

Smiling bald man with a blurred background.

Welcome

Hello, I’m Rev. Richard P. Smith and I’m very glad you are here.

The Online Chaplain was created as a warm and welcoming place for anyone seeking a little faith, hope, purpose or peace.

You may have a strong faith, many questions, or no particular religious background at all. You may be grieving, exhausted, carrying responsibilities that few people see, or simply looking for a quiet moment in a noisy world.

Wherever you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here.

My Story

My own journey has taken me through military service, healthcare, leadership, bereavement, pastoral ministry and many of the ordinary joys and difficulties of life.

I served for more than twenty years in the British Army, much of that time within military healthcare. I later continued working in NHS primary care, supporting patients, staff and communities through periods of change, challenge and uncertainty.

These experiences taught me that people do not always need quick answers. Sometimes they need someone to listen, to care, to pray, and to walk beside them for a while.

I am an ordained minister, but I do not believe ministry should be confined to church buildings. Compassion, prayer and the presence of God can be found in hospital corridors, family homes, workplaces, funeral chapels - and through a screen.

Why The Online Chaplain?

The Online Chaplain exists to help ordinary people discover God’s presence in the ordinary moments of everyday life.

It is a ministry of presence rather than performance.

My aim is not to pressure anyone, offer easy answers or pretend that faith removes every difficulty. It is to create a gentle and trustworthy space where people can pause, breathe, ask honest questions and encounter the hope found in Jesus Christ.

This ministry is guided by a few simple commitments:

Christ before personality.

Grace before performance.

Care before content.

Kindness before criticism.

Prayer before productivity.

What You Will Find Here

Through The Online Chaplain, you will find short reflections, simple prayers, gentle Christian encouragement and opportunities to explore faith at your own pace.

You can also request prayer, make contact during a difficult season, or enquire about funeral, memorial and wedding ministry.

Every message is treated with care. Every prayer request is read personally.

I cannot promise to have every answer, but I can promise to listen with compassion, respond honestly and point gently towards the love and hope of Jesus Christ.

Thank you for visiting.

Come in. Take a breath. Stay a while.

Grace and peace,

Rev. Richard P. Smith
